Mom Pleads Guilty to Attacking Stripper
WHEELING, Ill. (AP) - A woman has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery, admitting she attacked a male stripper who failed to meet expectations during her daughter's bachelorette party.
Jacqueline McMahon, 52, was sentenced to 30 days of court supervision and ordered to pay $2,500 restitution to the victim in a plea deal reached Monday. Prosecutors also agreed to drop battery charges against McMahon's daughter, Carrie McMahon, 22, of Loveland, Colo., and bridesmaid Kelly Meyer, 33.
The 28-year-old man suffered head injuries, bruises and scratches when he was punched, kicked and hit over the head with a bottle after his July 2002 performance at a hotel in Crystal Lake.
Police said attendees at the party became angered when the stripper showed up late and turned out to be a stand-in for the dancer requested by the hosts. Tensions increased when the man allegedly ended his performance sooner than expected and without paying enough attention to the bride.
Polyamorists seek acceptance in Unitarians
BOSTON · No one uttered a word when Harlan White walked into church one day with two women, one on each arm. They were, he says, accepted like any other family in his Unitarian congregation.
...Activists define polyamory as "responsible non-monogamy," or the potential for loving more than one person at a time. They say "polys" want honest, intimate, enduring love relationships. They just don't want relationships to be limited to two people.

Yahoo! News - Microsoft Is Using Linux To Protect Its Own Web Site
Microsoft has made a big deal out of asserting that Linux is not fit for the enterprise. But Microsoft itself is using Linux to help protect its servers against denial-of-service attacks.
According to a post on the Netcraft Web site, Microsoft changed its DNS settings on Friday so that requests for www.microsoft.com no longer resolve to machines on Microsoft's own network, but instead are handled by the Akamai caching system, which runs Linux.
As of this writing, Netcraft reports that www.microsoft.com is still running on Linux, although microsoft.com is reported as running on Windows Server 2003.
A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company "respects the fact that [its partners and vendors] may have diversified business models and operate in mixed IT environments. Microsoft's main concern is doing whatever it takes to help ensure customers can get to the Blaster worm patch to protect their computers.... Microsoft is using Akamai's extensive worldwide network to distrubte the massive traffic that is illegally being directed at Microsoft by hackers."
Yahoo! News - EPA Watchdog Rips White House on NYC Air
The White House "convinced EPA to add reassuring statements and delete cautionary ones" by having the National Security Council control EPA communications in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to a report issued late Thursday by EPA Inspector General Nikki L. Tinsley.
"When EPA made a Sept. 18 announcement that the air was 'safe' to breathe, the agency did not have sufficient data and analyses to make the statement," the report says, adding that the EPA had yet to adequately monitor air quality for contaminants such as PCBs, soot and dioxin.
In all, the EPA issued five press releases within 10 days of the attacks and four more by the end of 2001 reassuring the public about air quality. But it wasn't until June 2002 that the EPA determined that air quality had returned to pre-Sept. 11 levels — well after respiratory ailments and other problems began to surface in hundreds of workers cleaning dusty offices and apartments.

Episcopal congress turns to 'marriage' - The Washington Times: Nation/Politics
Wendy Griffith, a reporter with the Christian Broadcasting Network, asked presiding Episcopal Bishop Frank Griswold about Bishop-elect V. Gene Robinson, who was confirmed Tuesday as the first openly homosexual Episcopal bishop. He is divorced and lives with his male partner.
If, the reporter asked, a divorced male bishop could live with a man to whom he was not married, what about a divorced heterosexual male bishop living with a female lover?
"Or," she added, "is being outside marriage only OK if you are gay?"
"The Episcopal Church honors holy matrimony," Bishop Griswold said, "and certainly if a male were elected bishop and was living with a woman without benefit of clergy, that would be a significant problem."
"So there's a double standard, then?" Miss Griffith asked, at which point church spokesman Jim Solheim abruptly ended the press conference.

Fire Destroys Beam Ky. Bourbon Warehouse
By ELLEN R. STAPLETON, Associated Press Writer
BARDSTOWN, Ky. - Flames engulfed a seven-story bourbon warehouse Monday, sending alcohol-fueled flames more than 100 feet in the air.
The Jim Beam warehouse collapsed about two hours after the fire was reported at 3 p.m. and continued burning. The company said the metal-and-wood structure held about 19,000 barrels of bourbon, or less than 2 percent of its bourbon inventory.
Married Catholic Priests Still Committed to Calling (washingtonpost.com)
Neither of the Smiths is a practicing Catholic, but both are spiritual and believe in Christ, Smith said. And his 27-year-old wife, a hairstylist, comes from a family that is "hard-core Italian Catholic," he said. For these reasons, they wanted a priest at their marriage, which took place at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield.
There were readings from Ecclesiastes and the Psalms, Smith recalled. Then Cerrato read the words to the 1985 hit "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis & the News. "It was neat," said Charles Smith, "and fitting."
